Week 4 reading task - Digital Literacy

Out of the three texts I was presented with week I definitely found the journal piece the most engaging. I found it daunting due to its length and initial difficult language but started enjoying it as they got into the psychology of digital literacy and the interviewees opinions on their own biases. I have thought about selective exposure quite a bit but have never read up on it, so I definitely found this piece informative. We all assume everyone sees the same side of the internet us, are being shown the same opinions and the same articles, this is incredibly untrue. Left wing and right wing people are being fed completely different information aligning with their views. This can be damaging as it creates a further divide between the population and also because it can be disastrous in general, I always like to think of the example of Trump and Biden. The republicans will agree with trump no matter what he says, it does not matter if the opinion is liberal or not, if Trump says it, they will follow, but they would never even give a minute of their time to consider it if it was a democrat speaking. This point is further driven home as in the journal the participants point out that they have preconceived ideas when reading any article. Republicans will read a republican sourced outlook with an open mind while they will only read democratic pieces at face value, to mock them. I found it good to see the participants could identify sources of bias in the pieces, from political bias, tone and purpose and the ignoring or discussion of climate change. I found this last point fascinating as it shows a form of self awareness from both sides about their media exposure based on their political views.

In relation to the two opinion pieces I read prior, I definitely found the first one easier to read and digest than the second one. The first piece was very factual and used basic language while the second one was slightly more difficult to read but used more statistics.

Comments

  1. This piece that I have read I have found to be a very interesting insight to the topic at hand. The topic and discussion is great but if you could have included some sources to back up some of your claims and give examples regarding the Trump and Biden situation. The discussion is great and is a fantastic example of misleading information and personal bias. This is such a relevant topic especially for this current era, and since we currently live and deal with this problem everyday.
Another point I would like to talk about would be the structure of the blog, opening it for the first time it can be difficult to understand as people may think that it is just a wall of text. Dividing your blog into structured paragraphs would make it more inviting to read and even more so with quotes and sources.
Everything else looks great otherwise! Only issue that you would need to keep in mind next time would be to properly structure the blog as well as citing your sources when discussing topics at hand, it is important to properly cite your sources and quotes as so people trust the blog you write.
